Twenty years ago, a badly wounded pathfinder named Tomoe Nagisei limped out of the Valashmai Jungle of Tian Xia. Tomoe was rescued by a farmer named Li Izanaki, who tended to her wounds and let her stay at his home while she recovered. Tomoe left soon after to report to her captain, but she returned to Li shortly after nine months with their child. The boy’s name was Mugen.
Mugen grew up with his father and his wife, who was not his mother, and his half brother and sister. Every few months, his mother would visit, usually with a trinket from her recent travels, stories for her son, and some money for his father and his wife. While his brother and sister were very close, his father’s wife was always cold towards him. As he grew Mugen couldn’t help but wonder if it was because she thought that his father loved his mother more. Mugen lived for the days that his mother would come and see him, and would spends weeks after she left acting out her latest exploits in the fields, pretending a stick was his mother’s naginata, Tatsumaki.
Mugen grew up and showed some aptitude for the arts, and at the age of ten was enrolled in the Academy of the Eternal Rose. While he showed some aptitude, Mugen knew that he was only granted entrance because of his hair. Mugen was born with a mixture of black and white hair, in Tian Xia which in Tian Xia is believed to be a sign of greatness. So Mugen’s life continued, spending most of the year being educated and trained in the arts, and spending his summers with his father and assisting in the harvest. While training at the Academy, Mugen became very devout in his faith towards Shelyn, however he would not be content merely staying as a priest, he wanted to follow in his mother’s footsteps. He would become a pathfinder, he would find beauty that the years had hidden away and bring them back to light, and his greatest hope was to one day go on an adventure with his mother. But this was never to be.
Tomoe had died on the other side of the world, in Garund. A venture-captain came to him with her body and her naginata, the blade had been shattered and was not found. Mugen buried his mother at the age of twenty, he was now the last of Nagisei line. Mugen was thrown into a great depression until one night while heavily drunk, he dreamed of his mother and when he reached out for her and awoke holding Tatsumaki. Mugen realized that while he had her weapon, he could have his adventure with his mother, and he would honor her memory. A replacement blade was forged, the blacksmith was quite confused by his order of a naginata blade that could be removed later. But Mugen’s path was clear, he would go to Garund, find his mother’s blade and restore it.
Calling on a favor from one of his mother’s friends in the Pathfinder’s Lantern Lodge, he used their teleportation circle and was sent to the home of a Venture-Captain in Cheliax. Using money that his mother had left him he bought enough supplies to make a Pathfinder proud, and then he booked passage in Corentyn, aboard The Jenivere. With Sargava in his sights, this mysterious, beautiful new world ahead, and the lure of adventure, Mugen is about to finally make his mark on the world.
The Code of Shelyn
As a paladin of the Eternal Rose, Mugen must follow these rules or else he will lose Shelyn’s blessing.
- I am peaceful. I come first with a rose. I act to prevent conflict before it blossoms.
- I never strike first, unless it is the only way to protect the innocent.
- I accept surrender if my opponent can be redeemed—and I never assume that they cannot be. All things that live love beauty, and I will show beauty’s answer to them.
- I will never destroy a work of art, nor allow one to come to harm unless greater art arises from its loss. I will only sacrifice art if doing so allows me to save a life, for untold beauty can arise from an awakened soul.
- I see beauty in others. As a rough stone hides a diamond, a drab face may hide the heart of a saint.
- I lead by example, not with my blade. Where my blade passes, a life is cut short, and the world’s potential for beauty is lessened.
- I live my life as art. I will choose an art and perfect it. When I have mastered it, I will choose another. The works I leave behind make life richer for those who follow
